Announcing the Good News Summit

October 24, 2017 Leadership Tulsa

Leadership Tulsa is excited to announce the inaugural Good News Summit on February 1, 2018.

The purpose of Good News Summit is to recognize the good work, positive outcomes, and collaborations happening in Tulsa across sectors and to connect organizations community organizations and leaders.

Tulsa’s first ever Good News Summit will bring together more than 300 community members to recognize the good work, positive outcomes, and collaborations happening in Tulsa and connect community organizations and leaders.

“Every year as we plan our Leadership Tulsa class programs, we realize there are so many great stories that we just don’t have time to tell,” reflects Wendy Thomas, Executive Director of Leadership Tulsa. “Now, for the first time, we are calling on Tulsans to come together to tell the good news of our community in a format designed to engage, energize, inform, and make new community connections.”

From non-profits to government, social services to exciting business entrepreneurship, philanthropy to healthcare, the Good News Summit will uncover, highlight, and celebrate anything that is making Tulsa a better place for anyone.

The idea for the Good News Summit is rooted in the science of positive psychology. Dr. Kevin David, Emcee for the Good News Summit and Provost and Associate VP for Institutional Effectiveness at Tulsa Community College, observes, “Research shows that people tend to dwell on bad news, despite having more positive than negative experiences.

“Yet,” Dr. David continues, “sharing positive experiences induces positive emotion and promotes creativity and well being, and research indicates that happiness is contagious, as far as three degrees of separation. Taken together, these findings reveal the need for intentionally sharing and discussing good news to counteract our natural tendency to focus on the negative.”
