Forty years ago, artist Felix Cole brought to life the amazing historical mural at the Lacy Park Community Center, honoring African Americans who have overcome a multitude of struggles and made their marks on history. This year, Monique Richard, Mr. Cole’s niece and member of LT Class 37, is leading the efforts to bring the artist back to Tulsa to make some final additions to the mural, including portraits of President Obama and the first family. The unveiling of the final updated mural is scheduled for Saturday, October 5, 2013.
The Lacy Park Mural Project looks to produce a film documentary, a touch screen/audio device for libraries and other educational resources. To write the final chapter of this story and preserve the mural for posterity, The Lacy Park Mural Project and the Arts & Humanities Council of Tulsa have joined forces in an effort to raise $20,000 for this project. Please see the attached brochure and letter from Ms. Richard for information about how you can help them reach their goal.
For those of you who have seen the mural, you know what a treasure it is. For those of you who have not, you owe it to yourself to plan a visit!
